Elrie was born in Dothan, AL October 8, 1945 to the late Elrie Stephens, Sr. and Nancy Stephens Williams. He was the youngest child of five children.

Elrie Graduated from Carver High School and enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1962. He re-enlisted after his first term of duty in 1965 and was a combat Veteran of the Vietnam War.  While Elrie lived in Dothan, Al most of his life, he also lived and worked in Atlanta, GA for a period of time. He attended Troy State University where he earned an Associate Bachelor's Degree.  Elrie's work and career included working at Wells Fargo Bank, Printpack, Inc. in Atlanta, GA and the U.S. Postal Service in Dothan, AL. Elrie will be remembered as the first African American mail courier in Dothan, Alabama.

Elrie Stephens Jr., 74, passed away at his home on Friday, January 10, 2020  from congestive heart failure. Elrie leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Tammy Crews Stephens, Dothan, AL; four children, Elrie Stephens III, of California, Brandy Ward (Summer) of Atlanta, GA and Ericka Stephens Platt (Will) of Atlanta, GA and Cortney Crews of Dothan, AL; seven grandchildren, Steve Martinez, Devin Ward, Tyler Ward, Miles Ward, Brianna Davis, Gailianna Stephens and Hampton Davis; his brothers, James Stephens (Bettye) of Detroit, MI and John Stephens (Bess) of Atlanta, GA.  He will be remembered fondly by a host of nieces, nephews and loyal friends, Grover Pearson, Bushrod Teague  and Christopher Dozier .

Elrie is preceded in death by two sisters, Pearl Stephens Pratt (Theodore) of Severn, MD and Eloise Stephens Forrester (Robert L.) of Dothan, AL; his former wives, Birma Miles Stephens and Rosie Gail Ward Stephens.
