Listen to Obituary

Mary Louise Thompson, affectionately known as "Sister", departed from this life peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Sunday, July 19, 2026. She was 79 years old.

Sister was born to the late Walter "Son" and Mary Dell Thomas in Henry County, Alabama. She was the 12th child of 16 children. She accepted Christ at an early age and was a devoted member of St. Peter A.M.E. Church where she served faithfully until her recent illness. Sister graduated from Mack Matthews High School and continued her education at Tallahassee Community College, earning her Associate's Degree. She served in the U.S. Army Reserve and was honorably discharged while working at Centel Telephone Company. Sister later worked at Florida A&M University until she moved back to Alabama in 2003.

Sister was a lover of the FAMU Rattlers and she attended games regularly while hosting family at her home in Tallahassee, Florida. Everyone knew that visits came with good, hot meals and neverending hospitality at her home. Many of her nieces and nephews spent summers with her and even lived with her sometimes. Her home became home for many of Tanana's friends who were attending college away from their own families.

Sister was preceded in death by her parents and 10 of her siblings. She leaves to cherish her memories: her daughter and son in love, Tanana and HaG Hardamon, special daughters/nieces: Tracy (Herman) McDaniel and April (Eddie) Jones, grandchildren, great-grand children, siblings: Carrie Christmas, Gloria Stalling, Brenda Singletary, Marie Thomas, Levi James (Lou Jean) Thomas, Billy (Thelma) Thomas, and Matthew Thomas; closest friends of more than 50 years: Wilma Wiggs and Juanita "J.J" Cook; a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Special thanks to her "Lady-Sitting Committee": Alice Christmas, April Stalling Jones, and Deja Stalling-McGhee for providing respite care when needed; and Gentiva Hospice Care Nurses and Staff for their excellent care and support.
