Rosie Lee Hurt

Obituary

Rosie Lee Hurt was born on November 3, 1935 and departed this life on February 27, 2019 due to an illness. She was born to the late Henrietta Flowers Hurt Brooks and the late Clarence Hurt. She was baptized as a child and was a faithful member of the New Bethel Baptist Church in Dothan, AL.

Rosie lost her eyesight when she was 14 years old but didn’t allow that to stop her, she became in inspiration to her entire family, her friends and to her community.

She graduated with a Master’s degree from Talladega College and became a Teacher in the Americus Georgia School District in Barbour County, where she taught blind and hearing impaired students and she also tutored students in other counties because there was no other Blind Teachers in the area that could teach both blind and hearing impaired students. She was a member of The National Federation of the Blind, Blind Teachers Associates, Pioneer of Blind Educators, and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority. She loved traveling, reading and attending meetings.

Rosie loved her family deeply she was known as our Family Historian and she would often talk about her life and the lives of our family. She loved to talk on the phone and would do it for hours. Those that were closest to her knew she had a love of bread and a love of sweets which included candy corn, circus peanuts, roasted peanuts and pound cake. With the assistance of Robbie Gilmore, Rev. Michael Palmer, Roderick Palmer and Ruthie she was driven to New Jersey to obtain medical assistance and resided there until she passed.

She was preceded in death by her grand-parents Marion Daniel Flowers and Classie Mae Flowers; Aunts Mary Elizabeth Clark, Mary Lee Kirkland; Uncles Frank Flowers, Rev. James D. Flowers, William Ernest Flowers and James Andrew Flowers.

Rosie leaves to cherish her memories a brother Eduardo Hurt of Stone Mountain, GA, a cousin Kelvin Edwards of Maine; two Aunts Robbie Mae Gilmore of East Orange, NJ and Mildred Evans of West Orange, NJ; two loving cousin Janie Palmer of GA, Dovie Flowers Scott of Baton Rouge, LA, a cousin Norman McCloud of Dothan, AL; four God-Children Erika, Chris, Pat and Putt Copeland; three lifelong friends Lullybell Copeland of Dothan, AL, Annie Lee Cochran of Dothan, AL, and Fannie Jackson of Philadelphia, PA; several loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Rosie’s final wish was for her final resting place to be the city of Dothan, AL where she was born and raised. Rosie, you are home now Rest in Peace!
