Mrs. Pearlie Floyd

November 18, 1934 ~ July 12, 2021 (age 86)

Obituary

Pearlie Mae Knight, daughter of the late Phillip and Nellie Knight, was born on November 18th, 1934, in Clio, Alabama. She was united in holy matrimony to the late Thomas J. Floyd Sr. on July 11th, 1953. From their union, they had nine children: Bonnie, Thomas (Peewee), Daniel (Duke), Robert (Ralph), Johnnie, Larry, Blane, Denise (Cookie), and Rodney.
In the late 1950s, Pearlie Mae Floyd and her husband relocated to Elizabeth, NJ, with their two eldest children. Pearlie worked for the Union County Public School system for two years. She later worked as a sales associate for Daffy Dans for five years. Following the passing of her husband, Pearlie moved back to her hometown of Clio, AL, in the late 1990s.

Pearlie enjoyed cooking family dinners. Spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren made her day and gave her life.

Pearlie Mae Floyd cooked from scratch.  She was a self-taught cook.  Whomever came to the Floyd home left with a warm meal and full stomach. The children of the community came for fun and food. Ms. Pearl (as she was called by her neighbors) made her home welcoming for everyone.  Her family loved Pearlie’s wonderful coffee cakes, banana pudding, biscuit pudding, and drop biscuits. Recipes weren’t written down and if you asked her, she say “add a little of this and a little of that”.

Pearlie Mae had an infectious smile, a good heart, and a beautiful soul. Nobody was a stranger.  She made you feel like she knew you her entire life after one conversation. She left a lasting impression with whom she encountered. If you came to Ms. Pearl with your troubles or heartache, she always gave words of wisdom and encouragement. Pearlie’s favorite saying was, “If the Good Lord is Willing”.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Phillip and Nellie Knight; her husband, Thomas J. Floyd Sr; their son, Larry Floyd; her siblings, John D Knight, D.C. Knight, Ethel Burgess, Willie Knight, and Nettie Grace Knight; and one great-grandchild, Zuriah Johnson.

She leaves to cherish her memories and celebrate her life, her adored children; daughter Bonnie Floyd of Phillipsburg, NJ, son Thomas (Mearita) Floyd of Piscataway, NJ, son Daniel (Sharon) Floyd of Havelock, NC, son Robert (Velma) Floyd of Allentown, NJ, son Johnnie Floyd of Orlando, FL, son Blane Floyd of Elizabeth, NJ, daughter Denise Floyd of Piscataway, NJ, and son Rodney Floyd of Clio, AL; sisters-in-law Janice Easter of Newark, NJ, Betty Floyd of Miramar, FL and brother-in-law Grady Whigham of Clayton, Al; 28 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
